Craig “Gus” Gustavson – Class of 1962

Craig “Gus” Gustavson was born and raised in Sparks, Nevada, and graduated from Sparks High School in 1962. Known for his loyalty, work ethic, and Railroader pride, Craig has spent his life giving back to the school and community that helped shape him.

After graduation, Craig enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve, completing training at MCRD San Diego and Camp Pendleton. Returning to Sparks, he began a 40+ year career in entertainment, working behind the scenes as a stagehand and later as Stage Lighting Director for the Nugget and Harrah’s Reno. His lighting work earned praise from a San Francisco Chronicle review, and he helped bring shows to life for legends like Bobby Darin and Roy Clark.

Despite facing challenges later in life—including age-related job rejections—Craig leaned on the strength of his Railroader community. He often worked for fellow alumni, refusing to set his own rate and instead asking them to pay what they could. His kindness and humility stood out.

In 2022, Craig volunteered to repaint Sparks High’s chain barriers in maroon and gold—completely on his own dime. His efforts were featured on local news, once again highlighting his dedication to SHS. Then at 79, he officially joined the school staff as a full-time custodian. Now approaching 81, Craig continues to take pride in his work, keeping the campus clean and being a daily inspiration to students.

Craig Gustavson is the embodiment of what it means to be a Railroader: hardworking, humble, and deeply committed to the community. His decades of service and quiet leadership make him a distinguished and well-deserving nominee for the Sparks High School Hall of Fame.
